The Colour White and Summer
Almost every woman – and man – has a white blouse or shirt in their wardrobe. And if I were to ask which colour people most often reach for in summer, many women would no doubt name white among their top choices. It’s considered a neutral tone, easy to mix and match, always appropriate for business, and flattering with a touch of summer tan.
But is that really the case?
Does white suit everyone – and is it truly that versatile?
From the perspective of colour psychology, white stands for neutrality, objectivity, facts and figures, precision, and more. None of these are negative traits – especially in a professional setting. Let’s set aside for a moment the more delicate associations with innocence, silence, or piety.
Combined with very dark colours – such as a black suit with a white shirt – it conveys status and authority. In summer, however, we often prefer soft “light-on-light” combinations, which feel airy and appear more lightweight. Shops are currently full of white clothing, and many people are drawn to it.
But does that mean it suits everyone?
White is the lightest colour in terms of value – meaning that those who wear it should ideally have very light natural colouring themselves. Outside of Scandinavia, that’s actually not the case for many people in Central Europe. During winter, more people notice that white can wash them out – and they reach for it less.
In a business context, especially in virtual meetings, I often recommend checking: Do I blend into the white wall behind me? Does my white shirt make me fade into the background?
Some people consciously become aware of this “invisibility effect” after having a personal colour consultation.
Conclusion
As a breezy holiday outfit on hot days, a white summer dress might be a lovely choice – for some. For others, it may reflect a desire for simplicity, conformity, or subtle elegance. In the end, it’s always a personal decision.
What I encourage is this: take a critical look in the mirror or your video call camera and ask yourself – Does this truly bring me into my strength, or does it diminish my presence and radiance?
