The colour white

and the summer

Almost every woman and every man has a white blouse or a white shirt in their wardrobe. And if I were to conduct a survey in summer to find out which colour many people choose in their wardrobe, then among women it would definitely be “white”. It has the reputation of being a neutral colour, can be combined with everything, is always suitable in a business context and is perfect in summer with a light tan anyway.

Is that really the case? Does the colour suit everyone and is it so versatile?

From the perspective of colour psychology, the colour “white” stands for “neutrality”, “objectivity”, “data & facts”, “accuracy” and much more. None of these are bad attributes if we associate them with the colour white in a business context. We’d rather ignore the associations with “innocence”, “quiet” and “piety”.

In combination with a very dark colour (black suit – white shirt) it expresses a high status. In summer, we often prefer “light in light” combinations as we find them light on the body and visually. The shops are currently full of clothes in the colour “white” and many people are happy to buy them.

But does this also mean that the colour can be worn well by everyone?

White is the brightest colour there is in terms of light value. This means that the wearer should have very bright light values in their own colours. Outside of Scandinavia, not many people in Central Europe actually have this. In winter, more people notice that the colour makes them appear paler more often and they use it less. In a business context, I recommend paying attention, especially in virtual meetings: do I disappear in front of the white wall in a white shirt / am I barely visible? Some people consciously perceive the feeling of becoming “invisible” as a result of a colour analysis.

Conclusion:

As a summer holiday outfit on hot days, I can understand why some people opt for a white, airy summer dress. For others, it may be a desire to be inconspicuous and conform or to emphasise their status. Everyone decides for themselves what to wear. I would like to encourage you to take a self-critical look in the mirror or at the camera and see whether this really brings me into my power or whether it diminishes my charisma and presence.
